Chapter 3

Dancers in Kate Weare Company's Sin Salida

Kate Weare Company

Sin Salida (Excerpt)

For everyone 8 and up

This excerpt of Sin Salida explores tango sensibility through the lens of Weare’s contemporary dance eye, upending tango’s traditional gender politics and illustrating how women can produce the heat derived from tango in and of themselves. Sin Salida asks the question: How does tango and contemporary dance—each over a century old and representing different cultures—speak to each other, wrestle with and embrace each other?

Tango as a form insists that we rely on others to perceive ourselves and our shifting desires, exploring individual freedom only through a continuous connection between partners (the tango embrace is called “the abrazo”). In tango, a “solo” refers to a dancing couple taking a turn on the floor, but never to a solo dancer. In stark contrast, modern dance has always exalted the individual as both locus of meaning and generator of content, putting forward a long and rebellious (i.e., feminist) tradition of the individual’s unique consciousness made visible through form.

About the Company

Kate Weare Company is a New York contemporary dance company known for its startling combination of formal choreographic value and visceral interpretation. As Artistic Director, Weare cultivates dancers’ individuality to unleash a chemistry onstage that is heartfelt yet precise and bold. Weare’s work probes into intimacy, power, identity, gender and the body’s capacity for truth telling.

“Weare gets under the skin of movement with almost surgical exactness, inflames it, and then makes it glow with a strange, yet familiar light. No one else is making work quite like hers.” –  Deborah Jowitt, Dance Critic

Weare has commissioned original scores from an eclectic array of composers and worked with a diverse range of designers and visual artists. Sin Salida marks Weare’s first collaboration with another dance form.

From the Choreographer
This duet comes from Sin Salida, a collaboration between Kate Weare Company and the tango company Union Tanguera. We played a lot with the balance of forms in this evening-length work, showing tango and modern dance in their pure state as well as cross-pollinating the forms. The forms are different: tango asks us to rely on others to understand ourselves, while modern dance springs from individualist meaning-making.

I’m proud of the artistry my dancers, Thryn and Nicole, put into this work. They create a marvelous contemporary contrast to Argentine tango’s struggle of the sexes, moving fluidly between aspects of epic femaleness—delicacy, ferocity, strength, vulnerability, daring—and embodying a sexiness full of autonomy and confidence that feels quite American!
