About the Show

When something isn’t there anymore, what is there instead? Both facing loss, a young tsarina and a peasant boy each seek help from the Baba Yaga—that most mercurial of Old World witches. Their destinies collide in a madcap musical adventure woven from the tapestries of Slavic folklore. With pop-up books full of puppets, original songs from Faye Chiao on piano and Anton Dudley embodying a host of hilarious characters, Baba Yaga and the Firebird blazes a hopeful path through the wilderness of growing up.

Really cool and well imagined! I really liked the acting and singing throughout the whole show.

—Gina, age 8

Things to Know

  1. Anton Dudley and Faye Chiao originally imagined Baba Yaga and the Firebird having a large cast, but they discovered during their time in New Victory LabWorks that the two of them could take on the show’s 15 characters themselves!
  2. While the story of Baba Yaga and the Firebird is original, it draws on characters and scenarios from classic Slavic fairytales that Anton’s mother read to him as a boy.
  3. This is not Anton and Faye’s first fairytale collaboration! They also wrote the opera Banding Together based on The Musicians of Bremen.

The show on stage is just one act of your experience! Come early or stay late for free lobby activities on the day of the show. Then whether you’re building anticipation, continuing the fun or looking for laughs at any time, at-home New Victory Arts Break activities await you whenever and wherever.

About the Artists

New Victory LabWorks alumni Anton Dudley and Faye Chiao have joined forces again, blending contemporary storytelling with classical forms to build the musical universe of Baba Yaga and the Firebird. Both with careers spanning musical theater and opera—Anton is a director, playwright and librettist, and Faye is a composer—together they are expanding the musical theater canon with heart, humor and really good music.
