New 42 College Corps: Applications Are Live!

New 42 College Corps

A whole new season at the New Victory Theater has begun, and that means you’ll be seeing both familiar and new faces of New 42 Youth Corps members when you walk through the doors. These Youth Corps members are ushers who work hard all season long to provide a welcoming experience in all New 42 venues. The program includes the New Victory Usher Corps, New 42 College Corps, and New 42 Fellows Corps. Right now, we’re hiring!

We’re currently recruiting CUNY community college students for the College Corps! Applications are now open until November 15, 2024.

The New 42 College Corps program provides paid job training, mentorship and career guidance for CUNY community college students. Some of the many skills taught to students include customer service, effective communication and problem solving, all of which can be applied to various performing arts theater jobs. New 42 College Corps duties include but are not limited to:

  • Greeting and providing outstanding hospitality to patrons. This includes scanning tickets, seating patrons, working at the merchandise or concession stand and facilitating Family Engagement activities during performances
  • Assisting in the safe exit of the audience after every performance, supporting in-theater evacuations when needed
  • Collaborating with fellow ushers and front of house leadership to ensure the theatergoing experience is warm, welcoming and accessible for all patrons
  • Providing additional support to theater and production staff as needed

Here’s what New 42 College Corps alums have to say about their experience:

Ushers

My favorite thing about being an usher is helping patrons get around the theater and helping make their stay as easy and enjoyable as possible. I also like interacting with my usher peers as we are all a diverse group, and it is a very interesting group to be around. I feel welcomed by everyone.

As an usher, I learned how to communicate effectively and make connections outside of school. New 42 has taught me that it is a place for everyone—even if I’m not specifically into acting or dancing—as I work the shifts, I learn to communicate and make connections with patrons. Every patron has their own story and I learned to listen.

I had a really sweet moment with a mother whose child had sensory needs. I let her know that we welcome all reactions and that we also offer Sensory-Friendly shows. She was so grateful that there was an opportunity for her son to enjoy theater.

When I first started out, I was really less social, not really interactive and uncertain about my own skills. But over time, now that I’m in college, I’m able to create a set of goals and carve out my own path.
