Meet the Artists

Baba Yaga and the Firebird

When something isn’t there anymore, what is there instead? Both facing loss, a young tsarina and a peasant boy each seek help from the Baba Yaga—the most mercurial of old witches. Their destinies collide in a madcap musical adventure woven from the tapestries of Slavic folklore. With pop-up books full of puppets, original songs from Faye Chiao on piano and Anton Dudley embodying a host of hilarious characters, Baba Yaga and the Firebird blazes a hopeful path through the wilderness of growing up.

Previous Development:

Baba Yaga and the Firebird was first developed with New Victory LabWorks during its 2018-19 Season and continued in residency during the 2019-20 Season. Baba Yaga and the Firebird was presented at the New Victory Theater during its 2024-25 Season.

CARTOGRAPHY

For audiences of all ages, CARTOGRAPHY explores the commonalities of migration and the concrete and metaphorical mapping at the center of worlds in motion. The production draws on Schaal and Myers’ work with refugee youth in the United States and internationally, inviting audiences to examine their own lives and the maps we have yet to draw.

Previous Development:

CARTOGRAPHY developmental partners include New Victory LabWorks in New York, NY, New Visions/New Voices at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., NYU Abu Dhabi Arts Center in Abu Dhabi and The Public Theater with Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, NY. CARTOGRAPHY received developmental support from the Center for the Arts, Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. Kaneza Schaal is a 2019 USA Fellow. The piece premiered at the Kennedy Center in early 2019.

The Dragon King’s Daughter

Twelve-year-old Kenny Li is being bullied at school. When he finds a magical tablet, he is transported to the Jade Kingdom where he meets Xing, the Dragon King’s daughter. Together, they go on a quest to save the world, finding courage and friendship along the way. Chinese dragon mythology, martial arts and stunning voices combine in this musical following an unlikely young duo on a daring adventure.

Previous Development:

The Dragon King’s Daughter was workshopped at Chelsea Factory with New Victory LabWorks in the spring of 2022. In the fall of 2022, it was selected for further development and commissioned by The Kennedy Center as part of the TYA/USA BIPOC Superhero Project. The Dragon King’s Daughter premiered at The Kennedy Center in November 2023.

The Garden

The Garden is a meditative performance for babies and their adults exploring themes of nature and life cycles. Poetic text performed in multiple languages blends with interactive nature toys, all seated on the grass and lovingly encircled by a panoramic backdrop under the open sky.

Previous Development:

The Garden was developed with support from the New York City Artist Corps, New Victory LabWorks and Chelsea Factory. Flying Leap’s Artistic Director, Jess Kaufman previously developed Mathilda and the Orange Balloon during the LabWorks 2019-20 season.
