Third-Year Usher Spotlight: Timothy Charles

We launched the New Victory Usher Corps the day the theater opened in 1995 to provide paid employment, job training, academic support, mentorship and an introduction to the performing arts for over 50 young New Yorkers each year. Since then, the program has provided over 400,000 hours of paid employment to over 660 NYC teens from across the city. Find out how young people ages 16-21 can apply to be a part of this award-winning program here!

All season long, we’ll be featuring young people from the Usher Corps in our show programs and here on New Victory Stories. Today, we’re talking to third-year usher Timothy Charles from Brooklyn, New York.

What was your favorite moment from working here?

My favorite moment working at New Victory was during my second year when my co-workers and I made up a song with kids before an education performance. Turns out, some kids DO have rhythm!

What has been your favorite show at New Victory?

My favorite show was Step Afrika!’s The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence. I liked every part of it—the music, singing, stepping, dancing, everything! I wish I could see it again.

The show I’m most excited for this season is…

I can’t wait to see all the shows—I usually like them all! But, I’m really excited to see Step Afrika! return with Drumfolk.

What is your dream job and why?

I want to entertain people in any way possible and make sure they go home smiling. The world is full of problems and I want to make people happy.

Who inspires you and why?

Lil Wayne—he’s so dedicated to his craft and always makes sure he’s the best.

What was your favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject in school was gym because I loved to play sports.

What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not at work?

I like to hang out with my friends or relax at home with an old movie.

What’s your favorite NYC hangout or neighborhood?

I like to hang out in a lot of places but my favorite place is Downtown Brooklyn. There’s a bunch of stores there and watching all the people shopping is a nice sight!

Describe your dream vacation.

I’d be getting a massage under the sun while being fed chicken tenders somewhere on an island with nice weather and a lot of space.

Say hi to Timothy when you come to see Drumfolk at New Victory until March 15!
