Multimedia marvels, sold-out circus, toe-tapping dance and more await! Offering the flexibility of choice and peace of mind with every ticket purchase, the 2021-22 season will see the return of in-person performances at the New Victory Theater, as well as the opportunity for guests to stream the season in their homes.

The new season is as joyful as it is impactful, embracing the values and beliefs we are engaged in as an organization with shows reflecting themes of inclusivity, belonging and how we can work through scary moments to help and heal each other.

Generation Rise

November 5 — 14

Ping Chong and Company and Urban Word NYC

They grew up in a global pandemic. They came into their own amidst renewed calls for racial justice. In their own words, Black, Latinx and Asian American teens bridge identities, cultures and lived experiences to share who they are and what they want in the world. From first MetroCards and going out, to canceled proms and coming out, young New Yorkers voice experiences of loss and isolation as well as new-found ways to connect, create and claim space during a year of crisis and transformation. Fresh, insightful and optimistic against all odds, they are Generation Rise.

Jim Henson’s Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas

Treasure a new holiday tradition with Jim Henson’s Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas! Based on Jim Henson’s beloved television special, this tuneful tale takes us to Frogtown Hollow where Ma and Emmet Otter risk what little they have to make each other’s holiday dreams come true. Featuring a lovable cast of performers with puppets from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, and a toe-tapping score by legendary songwriter Paul Williams, this very merry musical will warm the hearts of a new generation for winters to come!

The Acrobuffos are back! Circus and science collide when these globetrotting clowns return with their sold-out spectacle, Air Play (New Victory 2018). With knowing smiles and suitcases full of surprises, this comedic duo elicits gales of laughter as they transform ordinary objects into uncommon beauty. This delightful, flightful homage to the power of air will take your breath away as the Acrobuffos goad gravity and make really, really, really high art out of the very thing we breathe.

Jabari Dreams of Freedom

March 25 — April 3

First Woman

Young Jabari isn’t trying to dream big. He’s just trying to live free. Through his art and his dreams, Jabari escapes to where Ruby Bridges, Claudette Colvin and other young heroes of the Civil Rights Movement teach him what it means to be fearless. When he meets an impressionable six-year-old Barack Obama, will Jabari have the courage to share the lessons he learned from the past to help ensure the future? Through rap, freedom songs, hip-hop dance and humor, Jabari Dreams of Freedom empowers young audiences to be brave and stand up. Let’s lift every voice and sing!

Step Afrika!

With beating drums and shouts of “Liberty!,” the Stono Rebellion spurred the Negro Act prohibiting, among numerous rights, enslaved Africans’ use of drums. But the fight for freedom is never silent. A story of resistance, resilience and reclamation, Stono fills the stage with music and dance to honor the artistry and activism borne out of the body as a percussive instrument. From traditions of the ring shout to contemporary stepping, Step Afrika! reveals the hidden histories and resounding rhythms that transformed America.

At New 42, the safety of New Victory patrons, students, artists and staff is of highest priority. The nonprofit continues to monitor and follow guidelines and recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and New York State Department of Health for the venue’s development and refinement of Covid-19 safety practices and policies to ensure a safe and clean experience for everyone.

New 42 continues to update best practices and plans as circumstances and guidelines change and will revise our Covid-19 Safety Guidelines and policies around specific shows at the time of their on-sale dates.
