Founded in Canada in 1978, the Nephesh Theatre opened as the only professional Jewish theater company operating in Canada at that time. Then, in 1983, founder and director, Howard Rypp, moved Nephesh to Israel. The company’s mission is: “To bridge the existing gaps between various religious, ethnic and cultural groups through the creation and production of plays that simultaneously educate and entertain.” With such a strong desire to connect cultures, Nephesh Theatre’s work has been performed throughout Israel and abroad. They perform their repertoire of shows both in Hebrew and English, with over 400 presentations annually.
One of a Kind is the courageous true story of its playwright and main actor, Yossi Vassa, who recreates his family’s 430-mile journey from Ethiopia through the Sudan before finally reaching their ultimate destination: Jerusalem! Their journey takes place in the mid-1980s when there was a mass exodus of the Jewish people from Ethiopia looking to find peace, community and a better way of life in the Holy Land. Punctuated by the backdrop of AndArgay’s illustrations of the trip, One of a Kind is a multi-media performance piece that tells a story of hope, family and belonging.
