Luna Negra's philosophy is that dance can be a powerful tool for exploring cultural identity, promoting self-awareness and creating positive self-esteem.

The Luna Negra Dance Theater, founded in 1999, is “devoted to capturing the spiritual, sensual and historical essence of the Latino culture.” Artistic Director and founder Eduardo Vilaro combines choreography from the classical ballet genre with contemporary movement from the Latino and Afro-Caribbean styles of dance. Dance standards like the Mambo, Samba and Tango are reinvented with the influence of African and other culturally diverse dance forms. Collaborations with prominent Latino artists, both in and outside of the dance field, have helped to establish Luna Negra as one of the premier Latino dance companies in the country. With pieces ranging in theme from immigration to love, the work of Luna Negra can be appreciated by everyone.
