Getting to Know Ping Chong + Company

The artists at Ping Chong + Company use theater to bring communities together. Through a wide variety of art forms, including puppetry, dance, oral history and documentary theater, they explore the idea of social responsibility through artistic innovation. The company's artistic director, Ping Chong, broadens his audience's understanding of identity by visiting different, underserved communities and creating shows written and starring people living outside of society's norms.

Did You Know?

  • Ping Chong + Company first visited the New Vic in 1998—before all of the GENERATION NYZ cast members were born—when they performed Kwaidan.
  • Ping Chong, founder of Ping Chong + Company, has won numerous awards for his outstanding work in theater, including this year's Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellowship, two Obies (the highest honor for Off-Broadway productions), two Bessie Awards, the National Medal of Arts and a Guggenheim Fellowship, among many others.
  • The Undesirable Elements series comprises over 50 works created by different communities since 1992, including Beyond Sacred: Voices of Muslim Identity, Inside/Out…voices from the Disability Community, Secret Survivors and Cry for Peace: Voices From the Congo.

For less expensive shows and to help the artistic community flourish, the New York City Off-Broadway movement began in the 1950s, thanks—in part—to the 1954 revival of The Threepenny Opera.
