Getting to Know Ping Chong + Company

The artists at Ping Chong + Company use theater to bring communities together. Through a wide variety of art forms, including puppetry, dance, oral history and documentary theater, they explore the idea of social responsibility through artistic innovation. The company's artistic director, Ping Chong, broadens his audience's understanding of identity by visiting different, underserved communities and creating shows written and starring people living outside of society's norms.

Did You Know?

  • The Undesirable Elements series comprises over 30 works created by different communities, including Beyond Sacred: Voices of Muslim Identity (2015, LaGuardia Performing Arts Center), PUSH: Real Athletes, Real Stories, Real Theatre (2015, Tangled Arts + Disability) and South of the 8 (2017, La Jolla Playhouse).

For less expensive shows and to help the artistic community flourish, the New York City Off-Broadway movement began in the 1950s, thanks—in part—to the 1954 revival of The Threepenny Opera.
