What to Expect at an Autism-Friendly Performance What to Expect at an Autism-Friendly Performance

All patrons are welcome at these special performances. In order to make the shows more accessible to individuals on the autism spectrum and their families, we will adapt these productions in the following ways:
  • Sound in the production will be lowered and staff will warn of any upcoming loud noises during the show.
  • Lights in the seating area will be dimmed rather than fully dark during the performance.
  • A Relaxed Atmosphere allows patrons to talk and vocalize as they wish, as well as leave and re-enter the seating area as needed.
  • An Activity Area will be available with a live video feed of the show, coloring sheets and fidget toys if patrons need to take a break from the seating area.
  • A Calming Corner will be available with fidget toys and bean bag chairs if patrons need a quiet place to relax.
  • Autism Specialists will be available throughout the performance to provide assistance as requested or needed.
  • A Family Restroom (gender-neutral) will be designated.

How do I prepare for the show?
Watch the video trailers at the tops of our show pages for an introduction to each production, and explore each show's pre-show resources linked above. You may also use our "Visiting The New Victory" Social Story and explore our 360° virtual tour to familiarize yourself with what a trip to the New Vic will be like.

What should I bring to the show?
If your kid uses ear defenders or has a particular fidget s/he likes best, bring them along! You may bring your own snack if your kid has specific food preferences, or we have a selection of snacks available for purchase. We do ask that you enjoy your food in the lobby areas.

Will staff have training and experience working with individuals with ASD?
Yes. Autism specialists and volunteers from Autism Friendly Spaces will be on hand to provide assistance if needed, and New Victory staff members have received training about autism and how to make this event enjoyable for everyone.

Families are invited to "meet their seat" in advance of each performance and explore the lobbies and seating areas. Please call 646.223.3023 to arrange a visit.
